the Central and Southern Africa (1783 1848)

For this period very small step forward, in particular in the Central Africa has been made. We already mentioned travel of naturalists across Southern Africa; thereupon it is necessary to mention one more separate achievement: in 1797 to the Cape colony as the secretary of lord Makartnn there has arrived the Barrow which travelled the country and have made much the best card of Southern Africa, than known all before.

After that a number of minor travel has followed. In 1801 Trater and Sommervill have gone for the Orange river to the country of Negroes-bechuana and have almost reached lakes Ngami. Two years later Liechtenstein investigated country parts bushmenov and bechuanov to the north from merge of the rivers Orange and Vaal. Travel Berchella for the river Vaal and on country borders bechuanov (1810-1812) were of great value more likely for zoology, than for geography, but missionary Kempbell (about 1812) has rendered to a geographical science valuable service by that has precisely enough plotted all current of the Orange river and has opened sources of Limpopo. The head of military-topographical group captain Ouen (1822-1826) Has photographed and has plotted set of details of east and western coasts of Southern Africa and in particular has moved forward business of acquaintance with gulf Delagoa and it hinterlandom. It has started also scientific studying of Zambezi, but, unfortunately, all European participants of this enterprise have died during its carrying out. As he said, it should expand the Portuguese influence, connect the colonies together scattered in different places, to open a new trading way and by that to increase incomes of treasury and to stop advancement of Englishmen, ' for which it is necessary to watch closely: otherwise the lack of energy from our party will entail their distribution on the north '. Further, as it is not known about headwaters and sources of Zambezi, probably, that this river is connected with investigated Laserdoj in 1787 the river Kuneni, ' the largest waterway in all territory between Zaire (Congo) and cape of Kind Hope '.
