In 1881 Thomson has returned to the river Rovuma for the purpose of check of the message of Livingstone that on it there are coal-fields. Economically travel has brought only disappointment as that Livingstone has accepted for coal, has appeared actually bituminoznymi slates, and the imaginary anthracites found in this area at combustion gave over 50% of ashes. Search of a new way to Uganda from coast from area of Zanzibar was the Purpose of the third East African expedition of Thomson. Here some preliminary work has been already done by efforts Dekkena, missionaries I Drink and Uekfilda and as a result Fisher's recent travel. Last has reached in 1882 Kilimandzharo and has got to Great African Grabena where has opened lake Najvasha.
While Fisher was engaged in researches in Africa, Thomson left in March, 1883 Mombasa, has reached to ' majestic file Kilimandzharo ' and, having turned therefrom on the north, there has passed approximately the same by, as Fisher, to Great Grabena. Having come for lake Najvasha, it has made a loop towards mountain Kenya and has opened in Great Grabene one more lake-baringo. From here it has turned on the West, and then on the southwest and has gone to northern coast of lake Victoria near to Napoleon's gulf. Back Thomson has returned through mount Elgon, lake Baringo and further on a line which was passing some to the east of those which it left. Thomson managed to cross safely area fearless and aggressive masaev, blocking a way to Uganda, to make a number of the most valuable supervision in the areas visited by it and to put some new details of a pas their card.
