To success of the penetration into Sahara from the north Frenchmen, at least partially, are obliged begun by them in 1859 to advancement to Niger from Senegal. The first researcher of area Fouta Djallon was Lamber. It has followed Mazh; the instruction given to it, very accurately said: ' your problem is to investigate a line connecting our posts across the top Senegal with the top Niger, not features with Bammako which is represented to us the nearest point below which across Niger, possibly, more there are no obstacles for navigation '. Despite success Mazha in business of research of a valley of the top Niger, it did not manage to carry out of the task put to it, and after 1865 of attempt to reach the river Niger fade for the whole eleven years.
In 1879, in connection with the project of carrying out of the railway to Niger, new researches of a line have been undertaken. In two years has started to move on east Gallieni and though it had in the beginning no success, Frenchmen nevertheless continued to aspire steadily forward and on February, 1st, 1883 have reached Bammako. Construction on Niger two courts on which Karon in 1887 has gone down from Bammako to Kabary was last step to this direction.
