Madagascar. Political complications
you are: Madagascar
Political complications have led to the French armed intervention, and by the end of military actions, in 1886, France has established the protectorate over Madagascar. Considerable successes in island studying have been made both during military actions, and after their termination, up to 1895 In 1889 L.Kata and S.Mestr have made travel from Tamatave in Majungu at northwest coast and, having returned therefrom in Imerinu, have reached to the Fort-dofina at southeast coast. G.Gote's who has made the fiziko-geographical description of Madagascar both on the basis of works of the predecessors work concerns the same period, and according to its own travel which it has started in 1892
Attempt to lean against the native power has appeared unsuccessful, and in 1895 Frenchmen have passed to conquest of island by military force. In 1896 Madagascar has been declared by the French colony. It not only had the important political and economic consequences, but also has led to that military topographers under the guidance of Vere have started regular research of island. Among the largest expeditions of scientific value it is necessary to note travel of the Grandide-son (1898 - 1902) which work by southern and western parts of island not only has served as worthy addition of work of his father, but also has led to opening until then absolutely unknown areas.
When officers-topographers of geographical management of the French army have started island research, it remained still practically absolutely not not studied. Even in 1899 general Galeni who was the governor of Madagascar, said, that it is possible to carry three quarters of territory of island to this category. Now it already it is impossible to tell: all Madagascar is investigated, and on a considerable part of its western half detailed geodetic shooting is made.
