Studying of a valley of Colorado was other outstanding research enterprise begun in 1869 Powell. This valley already and drew earlier attention, but since time of its visiting Ajvsom in 1857 of regular shooting of its territory was not made. Having at the order four ordinary veselnye boats, Powell has gone down on the river from that point where now there is Green-River-Stejshchn, on 1600 km down to a river Virdzhin mouth. Expedition work has crowned full success.

Research of Colorado was only a part of many-sided activity of Powell and its colleagues who have worked in the west, mainly in Wyoming, Utah and Arizona, more than ten years (1867-1878). On the basis of their researches such classical works, as ' Research of the western river Colorado ' Powell and ' Geology of mountains of Henry ' Gilbert also are written.
