the United States. Geography of the distant West
you are: the United States
The geography of the Distant West up to the middle of XIX century was known only on materials of dealers for furs. The data collected by them replenished sent from time till time with scientific expeditions to which reports we now and will pass. In 1819 the major S. G.Long and its eight assistants left Pittsburgh, have gone down downwards across Ohio and then have risen upwards on Mississipi and Missouri to the Old-kaunsil-bluff. On road expedition has sent party upwards on the river Kansas for district research between this river and the river Platte to return on this to last to Missouri. Next year Long has reached Rocky mountains in that place where the river follows from them Southern Platte, and investigated these mountains in a southern direction to the river Arkansas. During this campaign Dr. E. Jams the first has ascended to top of peak to the Ration. On a return way one party under the command of major Bell has gone down downwards on the river Arkansas, another under the command of Long has reached Kanadian-River and, having accepted it for Red River, has proceeded on it before its merge to the river Arkansas. Thereby Long's error as earlier the Ration error, has led to important though also to unforeseen consequences.
